Cannabis Alcohol Tincture

How to make a cannabis alcohol tincture. Vodka, Schnapps, Brandy, etc.

THC, the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana (cannabis), is not readily digested by itself. Because THC is alcohol soluble it can be extracted into alcohol in order to make it more accessible to the body.

theCannabisChef recommends using a liquor with at least 50% alcohol.

  • 3/4 oz or 22 g finely ground cannabis
  • 3fl oz or 90 ml alcohol (such as brandy, rum, vodka*)

*Different cannabis concoctions will taste better using a certain kind of alcohol. Refer to recipe.

DECARB your bud first! Place on cookie sheet in the oven at 150 degrees (F) for an hour or so, until the bud is dry and crumbles into a powder when rolled between your thumb and index finger.

  1. Soak the cannabis powder in water for 12 hours to remove any water-soluble impurities.
  2. Drain excess water.
  3. Put cannabis powder in an airtight container such as a mason jar.
  4. Pour alcohol over cannabis.
  5. Store in a cool dark place for at least 10 days. The longer the better.
  6. Shake the container several times a day.
  7. Filter through a strainer to remove solid particles. Repeat as necessary.

Can you add honey to the tincture after it has been made to help the taste?

Quick question. Is it desirable to dry the cannabis powder after you have soaked it in water? Maybe put it back in the oven between step 2 and step 3?

    Thanks for posting this!

By drying on forehand you can crumble your buds into a very fine powder. This effectively increases the surface area of your weed powder allowing maximum extraction of your water soluble impurities.

So that means if it’s still wet after soaking, I should put it back in the oven before adding alcohol?

Is there any degradation in the potency of the THC after having baked it at 150 for an hour? I’m only asking because I understand vaporizers only heat the marijuana and this releases THC vapors right?
Thanks! And by the way, LOVE this webpage!

In fact it is the other way around… In your buds is a THC derivative called THC-A. This is the acid form of THC and does not work as good, but by heating the THC-A it transforms into THC, the stuff that makes you high! ;-)

tincture….why is it called tincture? it not called oil?…confused

A tincture is an alcohol based solution. Oil is chemically totally different to alcohol. Try adding an alcohol solution to oil. You will see that they wont mix :)

can the cannabis be mixed with wine, and then how much do you take at a time

I never tested it, but I don’t think it will have much of an effect. The active component of cannabis THC is not water soluble, but can be partially dissolved in alcohol. For this you need beverages with a high alcohol percentage (> 40%). Wine typically has around 12% of alcohol, which probably is too low.

Just a quickie question from a soon to be first timer.

“1.Soak the cannabis powder in water for 12 hours to remove any water-soluble impurities.”.,Can you explain to me what you mean by soaking? Are we talking like..putting the powder in a cheese cloth?

When I’m reading this (best instructions so far by the way) I’m not sure about that step exactly, think you could clear it up a bit?

  • Kathy October 29, 2013, 10:31 pm

Janie, I’m with you. How do you soak it?

  • Lynn Marie Conners November 12, 2013, 12:10 pm

Thank you Chef !! I put my ground weed in mason jar to soak and then it was easy to drain off excess water using a ladies stocking. I then added my vodka and will shake it for 2 weeks at least. Then I can use it to make peppermint candies. Love this recipe thanks again

  • Queen Bee March 5, 2014, 4:41 pm

What is the peppermint candy recipe?

  • Dayna Attar November 28, 2013, 6:24 pm

Hey! Is it possible to use other alcohols than ethanol? I could easily get glycerol, and this would allow me to use this in my electronic cigarette…

  • missy February 3, 2014, 2:18 am

  • citlollipop February 13, 2014, 11:51 pm

How much water do I use to soak it

  • Shane March 7, 2014, 11:25 pm

Im going to use everclear for my first try at this. Im also going to extract the essential oil out of a chocolate mint plant using the same process but then reduce it down for more of a flavor oil to mix in with the final product. What do you think chef?
