THC, the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana (cannabis), is not readily digested by itself. Because THC is fat soluble it can be extracted into Ghee in order to make it more accessible to the body.
Ingredients for Ghee:
2lb unsalted butter
Making the Ghee:
1. Melt the butter in a pan or a double boiler at a low to medium temperature so that the butter is hot enough to boil.
2. A froth will form on the surface of the butter.
3. Remove the froth with a spoon.
4. Continue until no more froth appears.
5. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Ingredients for Cannabis Ghee:
1lb Ghee
1oz/28g of finely ground cannabis*
*The finer the powdered cannabis, the better this method will work.
Making the Cannabis Ghee:
1. The ghee is melted in a pan or double boiler and allowed to simmer.
2. Add the cannabis slowly, and stir often.
3. Allow to simmer for an hour.
4. Strain with cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer
, and allow to cool.
5. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

burnt ghee
I burned the ghee with the weed in it. Is there anything I can do to salvage my ounce of weed.
It might not be completely
It might not be completely ruined, but I can't think of any way to salvage it. :(
Yeild?
What is the yield of finished product for this recipe? How much of the finished Cannabis Ghee will I have? Trying to plan for a few recipes, thank you!
Using fresh leaves or trim?
HI, I'm very interested in using this ghee to help my muscle spasms brought on by a leg injury I suffered. I do NOT want to get high but rather, use it to moderate the spasm or even eliminate it. I've used cannabis before and if I used trim from the plant rather than bud, it was far less psychoactive. However, I've read Dr. Courtney's work on juicing raw leaves and I wondered if using the raw leaves in the ghee would be useful. I have access to lots of fresh leaves. Thank you.
driving
Just wondering, I've used many years ago, but I'm not a user. Made some ghee for my dad because he's got chronic back pain and he's been using a high dose of a morphine patch for many years now.
I'm not sure the morphine even works anymore, and not sure if the cannabis ghee did anything for his pain, but it sure improved his mood and appetite.
My question is, should I warn him not to drive stoned? I mean, is it any different than driving while on morphine?
Hash ghee better?
I'm glad to find your site!
My question is, will the ghee be better or made differently if using hash instead of buds? Fresh organic hash still should be strained?
Grace and peace
Frozen Ghee??
Can I freeze this ghee after preparation? I want tomake a good amount, but I dont want to use it all at once.. Thanks for the recipe and thanks for the great site!!
You're welcome! :)
Yes, you can - it might even freeze better than butter due to the very low moisture content. However, the best part about ghee is that it can be stored at room temperature (we've heard of ghee being stored for over 2 years at room temperature), but for longer storage, you can refrigerate or freeze your ghee. Freezing doesn't seem necessary though.
For the longest storage, use clean, dry utensils and store in an airtight container. If storing outside of your fridge, keep in a cool or room temperature, dark, dry area.
Gee
Actually! it is said in Ayurveda, that gee! if it is made right will last a hundred years without refrigeration... I would thank this is not true if you add in the cannabis...
Ayurvedic Medicated Ghee
It should last 6-12 months. Store in airtight clean jar and avoid getting moisture in the jar (i.e. use dry spoon).
Serving size?
Do you have a serving size for this? I just finished making mine and will probably eat in on toast or muffins or whatever. Just curious if you know the range for like just a little head change but helps with nausea and medicinal stuff and what a real good buzz. I will want to eat just enough most of the time, but every once in a while I would like to go for a really good buzz.
This is extremely variable.
This is extremely variable. There are so many factors to take into account - tolerance, health condition(s), potency of the bud, how well your body metabolizes THC, etc.
If you are looking for a mild high, go for about 0.5 grams (or less). There are 32 tablespoons in a pound so that's a little over 1 gram of cannabis per tablespoon, so using this ghee on toast/muffins would be good for a light medical dose of cannabis.
If you are looking for a stronger high, 1-2 grams is probably a good strong amount. But take caution and start with a low amount of cannabis until you understand your tolerance. For some, a gram is too much. Be careful and enjoy! :)
Cannabis Ghee
Thank you, thank you!!!! I have been trying to remember the process for this as I make a lot of ghee just for toast! I wanted something a bit different to gift for Christmas!
:)
You're welcome! We hope you and your friends/family enjoyed whatever you ended up making with the ghee! :)
